Acid WashingYour pool needs to be maintained regularly to make sure that it’s clean and free of any pile-up or algae. But if your pool cleaning frequencies are close to zero and you don’t get your pool cleaned regularly, then you’re sure to face issues relating to pile-up or worse, a large number of algae. If you feel like you’re unable to see the bottom part of your pool, then it’s time for an acid wash.
An acid wash is an extremely strong form of cleaning of the bottom layer of the pools to cleanse it from the thick layer of debris or algae accumulated over a long period. It is mostly focused on removing a thin layer of plaster from your pool to get the cleaning done. If you haven’t gotten your pool cleaned in years, then it is sure in need of an acid wash. While acid washes are good to help you clean up the excess debris, you should know that acid washes purposely remove a layer of plaster of your pool. Therefore, acid washes shouldn’t be made a regular way to clean your pool as that would increase your costs of adding a layer of plaster to your pools. You should opt for alternative pool cleaning methods unless you are in dire need to get the acid wash done. What chemicals are used? As the name states, there is a high-level acid used for cleaning pools that require an acid wash. It’s strong enough to cut through the layers of algae and debris piled up over the years. The muriatic acid mainly used to perform this wash is extremely dangerous, so only highly trained professionals are sent to do acid washes on pools. With a high level of acid being used to clean the pool, a pH balancer is added to ensure that it doesn’t react to anything once all the wastewater is pumped out and drained to a safe location. |
What are the steps of doing an acid wash?
To conduct an acid wash, there needs to be a series of steps that are to be followed. These will ensure that your pool is cleaned thoroughly and pumped out properly.
Draining the water and cleaning
The first step in getting your pool clean is to drain out all the water that is currently present in your pool and empty it. After the water is drained out, the cleaning process starts. The pool is cleaned with regular cleaning material and the algae or pile-up or scrubbed to ensure that it doesn’t dry up. Dried up debris and algae are much more difficult to clean so it’s better to make sure that they’re scrubbed.
Pouring the acid
Once everything is scrubbed and the water is pumped out, the acid is poured onto the surface and made sure that the lower layer is completely covered. Even though the water must be entirely pumped out, there’s a last-minute use of a water hose to wet the remains of the pool over which the acid is poured over. This proves to be a much better way of cleaning the pool and getting rid of the gunk stuck inside the pool.
Neutralising the pool
Once the pool is cleaned after pouring down the acid, it is time to neutralise the waste and make sure it won’t impact anything once it is dumped to a safe area. This can be done by adding soda to the foam that’s created by the acid poured. Once the pH levels are neutralised, the final step is close.
Pumping the waste water out
After all the above-mentioned steps are completed, the wastewater is pumped out and the pool is made empty. This takes some time as it gets difficult to get every bit of the acid out of the pool. However, with the use of good quality pumps, this can be done quickly and effectively. The only thing that needs to be taken into account is that it should be dumped in a place where it shouldn’t react to other things and a proper neutralisation process must take place.
